These Guatemalan Hand Beaded Coin Purses are a handcrafted piece of art. Handmade with glass beads, each purse is lined with a silky nylon lining and closes with a zip-top closure. The hand beaded coin purse measures approximately 5.00” wide x 6.50” tall. They are great for organizing items in your purse or bag, and hold credit cards, IDs and change. These fair trade coin purses/ medicine pouches are crafted by indigenous Maya women on the shores of Lake Atitlán in Santiago Atitlán. The purchase of this fair trade product provides a fair income for the women who make them.

Drawing upon the master craft-making techniques that have been a part of their culture for generations, our artisans skillfully handcraft these beautiful pieces individually, combining contemporary designs with ancient traditions. In Guatemala, we work with over 125 artisans, many of whom can trace back their craft to 1970's, but in the last decade, the craft has taken a fantastic turn and different and innovative color combinations and designs are being developed. In Thailand, we work with about 25 artisans, mostly of Hmong heritage located outside Chiang Mai, Thailand. This village industry provides families an opportunity to maintain the tradition of handcrafting while sharing an expression of their indigenous culture with the world. By respecting cultural tradition, creating a cooperative working atmosphere, and paying sustainable wages, these women and their families have become empowered with new skills and have an opportunity for economic stability.
